Scripture: Genesis 2:15-22
The Eternal God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. And the Eternal God commanded the man: “You shall eat freely of all the trees of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for the day you eat from it you will die. Then the Eternal God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him an assistant as a partner. So the Eternal God formed from the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. and all that man called every living creature was its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was no help as a partner. Then the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed its place with flesh. And the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man, he made a woman and brought her to the man.

A little over three years ago, I made a promise to the one I would spend the rest of my life with. It was the best decision I have ever made. That being said, I am reminded daily of the work that goes into marriage. The trip feels a bit like an emotional rollercoaster. There are days when Samara and I feel like we’re on top of the world. But marriage also has its challenges. There are times when we both do the hard work of loving.
It reminds me that the point of marriage isn’t for us to love each other all the time, that’s emotionally impossible. Marriage is a commitment to love each other, to serve each other, to empower each other. To put the other first. It’s work, but it’s good work.
Loving God, your greatest commandment was to love yourself and one another. You offered marriage as a holy relationship that reflects our relationship with you. Show us how to follow your example, set aside our selfishness and pride, and serve one another humbly. Help us to be of one mind and like mind and to value each other above ourselves, looking out for each other’s interests.
In the midst of our busy lives, help us take the time to love each other deeply, as you have loved us. May the love we have for each other be an example to the world of how you love them and have given your life for them.
